Lady Bulldogs Claim Third in Tournament

 

The Gleason High School Lady Bulldogs had a good finish in the 56th Annual Lion’s Club Christmas Tournament, bringing home third place.

The tournament began against Halls with the Lady Bulldogs picking up a big win by a score of 61-21. Gleason then faced off against Trenton Peabody where the Bulldogs were unable to take the lead and lost by a final score of 47-35.

Losing to Trenton left the Bulldogs up against Haywood for a chance at the third-place title. It was a tight game for both teams. Haywood came out in the first quarter with 16 points, while Gleason faced a strong defense and only scored eight points. Gleason improved in the second quarter scoring 12 points, but was still down at the halftime with a score of 24-20.

Haywood held onto its small lead going into the third quarter with Gleason still struggling to meet the net. In the fourth quarter, the game turned around in the Lady Bulldogs’ favor. Haywood had multiple fouls, which resulted in Gleason making six points from the free-throw line. Gleason’s Alayna Anderson scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. The Lady Bulldogs were able to shoot 18 points in the fourth quarter and Gleason was able to take the game despite being behind for much of it.

The final score was 45-43. Alayna Anderson of Gleason scored the most points in the game with 21, while Mecasia Taylor for Haywood scored 18 points.

With this win, Gleason finished in third place overall for the Lion’s Club Christmas Tournament.

Players named to the All Tournament team from Gleason were Alayna Anderson and Ava Sawyers. Ja’Demka Welch-Field of Haywood was also named to the All Tournament Team.

Gleason Wins Semi-Finals Against Dresden in Overtime

GLEASON (December 5) – The Weakley County Middle School Basketball Semi-Finals began Saturday, December 5 when the Gleason Jr. High boys’ team hosted Dresden Middle School. The teams faced off in a close match before going into overtime with Gleason eventually victorious.

Both teams faced a hard match-up as they fought for the first score of the game before a foul on Dresden caused Gleason to get on the board as Drake Lehmkuhl scored from the free-throw line. Gleason was able to score five more points in the first quarter for the lead with Dresden only having four points. Gleason kept its lead in the second quarter with Kade Sawyers shooting a three-point shot. The Lions were not far behind as Wesley Chapman picked up four points. At the halftime it was still anyone’s game as the score had Gleason leading 15-13.

In the third quarter Dresden came back strong with Chapman shooting six points. This, along with the Lions’ strong defense holding off Gleason, gave the Lions the lead by one point going into the final quarter at 22-21.

Dresden was determined to keep its lead as they had three, three-point shots by Cooper Allman, Landon Cartes, and Ty Bizzle. But Gleason was still fighting for the win as Bo Tyler Bailey scored six points and Lehmkuhl scored four points.

With the combined efforts of both teams, the game finished in the fourth quarter with a tie of 33-33 that led to overtime. There were three minutes given to see which team would come out on top to win.

In overtime Dresden was only able to score two points by Tanner Oliver. Gleason totaled six points in all with Owen Taylor scoring four of those. In the end Gleason won over Dresden 39-35.

Points leader for Gleason was Owen Taylor with 14 points, followed by Drake Lehmkuhl with 10. For Dresden, Wesley Chapman led the team with 15 points and Landon Cartes with 8.

The Bulldogs will play for the Championship title when they go up against the Martin Middle School Chargers Thursday night at Martin Middle School. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.

Gleason Graduates 32 During Friday Ceremony

Gleason High School graduated 32 during the Friday, May 11 ceremony in the school’s gymnasium.

 

The following were the top 10 graduates: Valedictorian – Chandler Dean Brawner, Braxton Vickers, Aubrey Katherine Wallace, Brittany Corum, Seth Wray Bowers, Tobias Dillard, Jayne-Shaye Bailey, Ericka Denton, and Jayden Anderson Green.

 

Jerry Sanders should be Jerry Sawyers and Pam Pointer should be Pam Poyner McElhiney.

Gleason’s Jayden Green Signs with Lady Cats

 

GLEASON, Tenn. –Jayden Green of Gleason High School signed with the Bethel University Lady Wildcats Wednesday. She was an integral part of the Bulldog squad that won a district title this past season. The four year starter was all - district and all-region during her prep career.

 

During her senior season she averaged 10.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 42 percent from the floor. She shot 76 percent from the free throw line. She hit over 28 percent of her three-point attempts and averaged 3.9 assists per outing.  She is a member of the Gleason 1,000 Point Club.

 

Chris Nelson, head women’s basketball coach at Bethel, feels she will be a great fit with his returners. “Jayden is a point guard’s point guard,” Nelson said. “She is very self-aware and does an excellent job controlling the tempo of a game.”

 

He added, “She does a terrific job scanning the floor in transition and knows when to go get the ball to reset the offense. Coach Sean Stephenson has prepared and instilled in her what it means to step on the court every day. “

 Jayden is the daughter of Rusty and Melanie Sawyers of Gleason and will major in Nursing.

 

Fellow School Board members bid farewell to Lindell Roney

District 2 School Board member Lindell Roney of Gleason is resigning before the end of his elected term, and a replacement will soon be named to finish out the remainder of his term. Fellow School Board members offered words of praise for Roney’s exemplary service to the people of his district and Weakley County.

Gleason Teen Named Volunteer Star

GLEASON (February 3) — Jayne-Shaye Bailey a junior at Gleason High School was named Weakley County’s youth recipient of the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Award. The award recognizes the efforts of 84 volunteers statewide who strive to improve their communities through service. One youth and one adult volunteer were selected from participating counties to receive the award.

 

Nominees were judged based on the community’s need of the volunteer service performed, initiative taken to perform the service, creativity used to solve a community problem and impact of the volunteer service on the community.

 

Bailey has volunteered for six years at AseraCare and Avalon Hospice, completing over 2,000 hours of service. Her efforts included annual planning of memorial services, assisting with yearly veterans programs, wrapping Christmas gifts for patients, attending health fairs, shopping for patients and families, addressing and mailing Christmas and birthday cards and helping the nursing staff set up for new patients.

 

Bailey is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gleason and an active member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship group. She is a member of the Gleason High School Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team. She is junior class secretary, FFA president, co-captain of the award-winning Gleason High School cheerleading squad and the winner of several pageantry titles. Despite her incredible schedule, Bailey stands out as a Weakley County volunteer.

The Gleason High School Class of 1964 celebrated their 50th class reunion during Tater Town festivities on August 30, 2014. The reunion was held at Mallards Restaurant in Huntingdon, with classmates having additional time to catch up on old times friends at the Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center in Huntingdon.

GHS 50-year Class Reunion - Class of 1963

The class of 1963 had their 50 year class reunion on Saturday, August 31, 2013.  Members of the class participated in the Tater Town Special parade by riding on  a "Class of 1963 ~ 50-year Reunion trailer. A member of the Class of  '63, the former Sandra Taylor who was the 1963 Miss. Gleason rode in a red 1963 Chevrolet Corvette owned and driven by Dale Nunnery, also a member of the Class of 63.

The 50-year reunion was held at the First Baptist Church on Saturday evening. The festivities were also attended by several well wishers from other Gleason High School Classes from the early to mid 1960's. A good time was  had by all!

Gleason High School Class of 1962:

Follow-up to their 50th Reunion - 2013

Members of the Class of 1962 followed up on their last year's 2012 Tater Town 50-year reunion by having a get together on Saturday, August 31st at at Hig's Restaurant in McKenzie. All members of the Class of 1962 and other friends were invited.

As can be seen from the picture below, the turn out for this follow-up was great, with 16 Class of 62 members attending and having a good time interacting with old classmates and other friends from Gleason School.
