Friday May 9th. A number of counties in West Tennessee, including Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Madison, Obion and Weakley counties, have been declared disaster areas by President Bush. Designation as a disaster area will make residents and businesses in these counties eligible to receive federal funds for losses resulting from the severe storms experienced by the region during the past week that are not covered by insurance. Four of the counties hardest hit by tornadoes - Madison, Dyer, Weakley and Montgomery - also qualify for federal funds to local governments, utilities and certain other nonprofit organizations to repair public facilities. Severe Storms in Gleason Result in Major Damage

Sunday May 4, 2003. The severe weather that has caused so much damage in the Southeast during the past few days has had a significant impact on the Gleason area as well. On Sunday high winds tore off the top of the Gleason water tank, left the steeple of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in a cornfield, and resulted in the loss of hundreds of trees. Part of the roof was also ripped off of Lillian's Bridal Shop, a communication tower on top of City Hall was destroyed, and railroad tracks were covered by fallen trees. Trees fell on cars and houses, with a number of streets being closed due to fallen trees and power lines. Source: The McKenzie Banner

Gleason's Ashley McElhiney Drafted by WNBA

Ashley McElhiney, former Gleason High School basketball standout, was drafted April 25th by the Indiana Fever of the Women's National Basketball Association. McElhiney was the 35th WNBA draft pick and a third-round draft pick for the Fever. McElhiney led Gleason's Lady Bulldogs to the 1999 Class A girls state title, Gleason's second. In an interview with the McKenzie Banner, Randy Frazier, McElhiney's coach at Gleason, says his program's prestige stock has risen. "I think this is the first female athlete from rural West Tennessee to play professionally," he said. "From watching her in second grade all the way through college, I'm not surprised that she's reached this level. I knew this was a possibility."
