Bulldogs Dominate Second Half Action to Bury Bradford

Stephanie Sturgis - Press Sports Editor

Soar — Gleason senior guard Colin Bennett drives past Red Devil defender Jeremy Harris for a second-half layup in the Bulldogs' 62-39 win over Bradford Tuesday night.

The Gleason Bulldogs' more determined effort on the defensive boards helped them pull away for a 62-39 victory over the visiting Bradford Red Devils Tuesday night in Gleason.

In a very physical confrontation, the Gleason girls fell to the Lady Red Devils, 48-39.

After repeatedly allowing second, third and even fourth and fifth shots per possession to the Devils in the first half, the Gleason boys began to crash the boards and limit Red Devil scoring chances.

The improved rebounding showing allowed Gleason to stretch out its one-point halftime edge, 26-25.

Senior guard Colin Bennett began to find his way to the rim for layups, pouring in 14 of his 17 points after halftime.

Foul trouble for the Devils also helped Gleason pull away. Bradford had three players — D'Marquis Wells, Colby Roberson and Jeremy Harris — foul out in the second half.

The Dawg lead hit double digits for the first time on a Bennett layup with four and a half minutes to play in the third. By the end of the quarter, Gleason's lead stood at 13 points, 46-33, on the way to the 62-39 win.

Center Ben Sumner helped keep the Dawgs in the game in the first half with 11 of his game-high 19 points and an intimidating shot-blocking effort in the paint.

Still, second-chance points kept Bradford close. At the end of the first quarter, Gleason was in front, 15-13, before the Devils shaved a point off that lead in the second quarter.

In addition to double-digit nights from Sumner and Bennett, Gleason's Ben Rollins added 12 points and Preston Frazier put in 10. For Bradford, Wells was top point man with 11 points followed by 10 from Harris.
In the girls game, Bradford used its size, physical play and a tenacious defense to frustrate the host Lady Bulldogs and earn a 62-39 victory.

Bradford forced five GHS turnovers in the first 3:34 including a pair of 10-second violations against the fullcourt press. As a result, Gleason trailed 4-3.

After a timeout, the Lady Dawgs got a pair of treys from Kim Edenfield and five points from Jenna Frazier for a 13-all tie at the end of the first quarter.

GHS turnovers, misses and frustrations allowed the Lady Devils to build a seven-point edge, 26-19, with two minutes left in the half. By the break, Gleason had cut the gap back to four points at 26-22.

In the third, the Lady Dawgs got off to a hot start with a 10-3 run to grab a 32-29 lead. The scoring run came in spite of more physical play from Bradford that saw Frazier decked with an elbow to the face that resulted in a cut cheek and an outburst from GHS head coach Randy Frazier.

The younger Frazier picked up her fourth foul with 1:47 left in the third, but poor free-throw shooting in the quarter (3-of-11) kept Bradford from pulling away. Still, the Devils led 35-33 with one quarter remaining.

Gleason cut the gap to two, 39-37, on Taylor Stout freebies with 5:24 remaining, but Bradford found the range from the free-throw line in the fourth (6-of-8) to ride to the 48-39 win.

Defense Dominates as Lady Dawgs Nip G'field in OT

Stephanie Sturgis - Press Sports Editor

Surrounded — Gleason's Jenna Frazier (front) looks for a teammate to pass to while Lady Yellowjackets (from left) Katie McCall, Emily Randolph and Jordan Galey close in on her. Frazier and her Lady Bulldogs teammates squeaked out a 38-35 win in overtime

In a game dominated by skin-tight, physical defensive efforts by both squads, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs managed to score enough points in the overtime to edge the host Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets, 38-35, Tuesday night in Greenfield. In the boys game, the host Jackets used a second-quarter run to build a lead they never relinquished in downing the visiting Gleason Bulldogs, 55-37, to make it a split.

Behind Taylor Stout's 11 points in the fourth quarter, part of a game-high, 21-point effort, Gleason overcame a six-point deficit in the final frame to force the extra session.

Greenfield's Katie McCall muscled in a layup for the first bucket of the fourth quarter to push her team's lead to a half dozen at 22-16. The Lady Dawgs (4-1, 2-0 District 14-A) retaliated with an 11-2 run — all the points coming courtesy of Stout — to flip the lead in their favor, 27-24, with 2:58 left in regulation.

The Lady Jackets (1-4, 0-2 District 14-A) ended the run with a 12-footer from Jordan Galey to slice the Gleason lead to a point, 27-26. Greenfield had a chance to take the lead after Jasmine Allen drew a charge on Gleason's Jenna Frazier, but turnovers were committed on three consecutive trips up and down the court.

With 44 seconds left, Gleason's Camille Cooper stretched their lead to three points, 29-26. McCall buried a jumper in the paint and, fouled on the play, rattled in the free throw to knot the score at 29-all with what proved to be the final points of the fourth quarter with 27 ticks left on the clock.

In the extra period, Stout put Gleason in front with a layup off an assist by Frazier. Greenfield knotted the score at 31-all on two McCall freebies. Frazier hit 1-of-2 charity shots, but Galey's 15-footer gave the Lady Jackets a 33-32 lead with 2:34 on the clock in OT. Stout notched a jumper to regain the lead for Gleason.

The teams traded two free throws with Mallory Robinson connecting for the host, while Frazier tallied two for a 36-35 Lady Dawgs edge with 1:27 to play in overtime. A Greenfield turnover led to a Kim Edenfield freebie for a 37-35 Gleason lead with 32 seconds left. With 13 seconds left, Galey's baseline drive was cut off by Frazier. As a result, Galey lost the ball out of bounds.

Frazier added another free throw with 11 seconds to play, and a steal by Cooper on an inbounds pass after a Greenfield timeout preserved the 38-35 victory for the Lady Bulldogs. Scoring was at a minimum in the first half. Gleason used a Cooper trey and two Frazier buckets to counter an Emily Randolph hoop and a McCall free throw for a 7-4 Lady Bulldog lead after a quarter.

The Greenfield defense kept the Lady Dawgs scoreless over a five-minute span covering the end of the first frame and the start of the second quarter. Randolph continued to contribute to the Lady Jacket totals with four points in the second quarter. Galey matched her output with four points. Greenfield outscored the Lady Dawgs 12-4 for a 15-11 halftime advantage.

The teams played to a five-five deadlock in the third quarter, setting up the dramatics of the fourth stanza.
In addition to Stout's 21 points, Gleason got 8 from Frazier. For Greenfield, McCall finished with 12 points, while Galey and Randolph each tallied 8 points.

In the boys game, Greenfield used a 12-0 run in the first half to grab its first double-digit lead on the way to the 55-37 victory. The Greenfield defense limited the Bulldogs to 8 points in the first half. A 12-foot jumper from Colin Bennett handed the Dawgs a 4-3 lead with 3:55 left in the first quarter. A half-minute later, Daniel Ricketts followed his own miss to put the Jackets in front 5-4. Greenfield never trailed again. Those numbers remained on the scoreboard when the low-scoring first quarter ended. In their 12-0 run, four different Jackets contributed points.

By halftime, the Jackets held a 23-8 advantage. The Jacket lead peaked at 22 points, 39-17, late in the third on the way to the 55-37 victory. Wes Clark's 15 points topped all scorers, while teammate Daniel Ricketts added 12. Ben Sumner's 11 points led Gleason. Source: Weakley County Press

Jaguars no Match for Gleason in Basketball Season Openers

Stephanie Sturgis - Press Sports Editor

Up and in — Gleason's Jordan Howington elevates for a jumper in the lane over Carroll Academy's Alex Johnson during the Bulldogs' 75-20 victory Friday night. Howington finished with a game-high 16 points.

The Gleason High School basketball teams can only dream about the rest of the season being as easy as their season-opening wins over visiting Carroll Academy Friday night in Tater Town.

The Gleason Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 78-5 win over the Lady Jaguars, while the GHS boys team earned a 75-20 victory.

In the girls game, Gleason head coach Randy Frazier kept his starters on the floor for limited minutes in the contest as the Lady Bulldogs dominated the action. Every GHS player saw action and all except one put points on the scoreboard.

The inside junior tandem of Jenna Frazier and Taylor Stout combined with the outside shooting of guard Kim Edenfield to propel Gleason to a 29-3 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Frazier scored all of her 12 total points in the first frame, while Stout added 11 of her team-high 13 points. Edenfield buried both of her 3-pointers in the quarter.

Heather Todd's trey provided the lone CA points in the opening quarter.

Frazier's bench helped the starters hold Carroll Academy scoreless in the second quarter. While the Lady Jags' side of the scoreboard never changed, Gleason added 20 more points, including seven from Sara Hensley and four from Maggie Lowrance for a huge 49-3 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Gleason got a 3-pointer each from Elizabeth Terrell and Ashley Coble while again keeping Carroll Academy off the scoreboard for a 63-3 lead heading into the fourth.

Todd finally hit the Lady Jags second and final basket of the game in the fourth quarter, while Hollie Townes pitched in all of her eight points for Gleason as the Lady Dawgs cruised to the 78-5 victory.

In the boys game, Gleason seniors Colin Bennett and Evan Orr set the standard early in the Bulldogs' 75-20 win over Carroll Academy.

Bennett notched six of his 13 points, while Orr pitched in with nine of his 11 as the Bulldogs built a 19-7 advantage by the end of the first frame.

In the second quarter, Preston Frazier's six points countered five points from Carroll Academy's Devin Wagner. In addition to Frazier's points, Gleason got four from Ben Rollins and a basket from John Johnson to stretch its lead to 20 points, 35-15, at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Dawgs controlled the paint with the play of Ben Sumner and Jordan Howington. The pair combined for 10 of the Dawgs' 24 points in the quarter with Howington putting in six points. Frazier and Bennett both added five point and Gabe Lowrance had his lone basket of the game as the Dawg lead grew to 59-18 by the end of the third quarter.

DeAndre Larrue's trey accounted for the only Jaguar points in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Howington dominated the boards on both ends. The sophomore center poured in 10 of his game-high 16 points and helped limit Carroll Academy to two points on a Larrue basket in the final quarter.
In addition to Howington's points, Rollins was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Jr. Dawgs Succumb to Greenfield

Ahead of the pack — Greenfield's Ashton Pence (left) drives to the basket with Lady Bulldog Lyndsey Griffin hot on her heels during action Monday night.

Jumping out to large first-half leads, the Greenfield Junior High Yellowjacket squads took both games from the visiting Gleason Bulldogs Monday night in Greenfield.

In the first game, the Lady Yellowjackets opened with a 4-0 lead in a cold-shooting first quarter for both teams on baskets from Emily Allen and Callie Croom. At the 2:21 mark, Briana Jones was fouled behind the arc and hit two of three free throws to put Gleason on the board and cut the lead in half. Greenfield, however, scored three more points and took a 7-2 lead after one.

The Lady Yellowjackets began to break away in the second quarter, holding Gleason to a lone Lindsey Griffin basket while putting up 16 points. At the break, the home team held a 23-4 advantage.

Plagued by turnovers in the third frame, neither team seemingly could buy a basket. Gleason opened with a jumper from Kim Quick and Greenfield scored its only points of the quarter with just seconds left on the clock. The scoring for the quarter was tied at 2-2, but the Lady Jackets maintained a 25-6 edge.

In the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs entered the bonus, went six of eight from the line and with a basket from Dalis Lampkins, scored more points in the fourth than in the entire game thus far with eight. Greenfield scored 10 points, however, including a three from Rachel Roberts, to take a 35-14 win.
Allen scored 11 points in the win. Lampkins's 5 led Gleason.

In the second game, 3-pointers from Tony Robinson, Hunter Crouse and Zach Grooms propelled Greenfield to a 13-1 lead after one quarter of play. Blake Taylor, who scored the Dawgs’ only point in the first quarter, put up three in the second and along with Austin Perry’s four points, helped Gleason to nine second-quarter points to Greenfield’s 11, but the Yellowjackets held a 24-10 advantage at halftime.

The Dawgs came roaring back in the third quarter and with four points each coming from Taylor and Perry, equaled the Greenfield offensive output for the quarter. But without gaining any ground, the Dawgs still trailed by the 14-point margin, 34-20, going into the fourth. Continuing to put up points, Gleason whittled the lead down to 10 points and outscored the home team 9-6 in the last frame of play, but Greenfield held on for the 40-29 win.
