Late Whistle Against GHS Ends State Tourney Dream

Late whistle against GHS ends state tourney dream | Gleason Lady Bulldogs, Jenna Frazier, Middleton Lady Tigers, Taylor Stout, Middleton, Gleason, Lady Dawgs, Sectional

Nothing easy — Gleason senior Taylor Stout (right) elevates for a jumper while a Middleton defender tries for the blocked shot during Sectional action Saturday night in Gleason. The host Lady Dawgs were defeated 26-24 to end their basketball season.

A blocking foul call proved to be the difference in going to Murfreesboro and staying home for the Gleason Lady Bulldogs.

In a game that was heavy on fouls and light on points, the Middleton Lady Tigers entered the bonus in the fourth quarter and held a 24-22 lead with 44 seconds remaining. Gleason’s Kim Edenfield dribbled the length of the floor and hit a layup to tie the score, but with nine seconds remaining, Sharon Morgan bounded down the court and slammed into waiting Lady Bulldog Taylor Stout who looked to be in position to take the charge. Stout was called for a block, however, and Morgan hit both free throws to give Middleton the 26-24 win in Sectional tournament action this past Saturday night in Gleason, edging them into the TSSAA Class A State Tournament.

“We just fouled too much,” Gleason first-year head coach Joel Ayers admitted. “We got into foul trouble and played a good part of the game with people on the bench. We turned the ball over too much and didn’t execute well in the end. The turnovers and fouls really hurt us.”

Morgan opened scoring in the contest by hitting one of two free throws and Coresia Berry made a shot inside to give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 lead. Sara Hensley quickly erased the deficit with a three, but Tataurus Howser muscled inside for a MHS deuce. Morgan knocked down a three and Stout answered with a two in the paint. Berry was given a wide-open three and connected to make it an 11-5 lead for the visitors.

Shanita Polk checked in for Middleton (29-2), but the visitors were slapped with an administrative technical foul for Polk’s name not being listed in the scorebook. Jenna Frazier hit one of two free throws, Ashley Coble recorded a bucket in the paint and Hensley swished from downtown to tie the contest at 11 at the end of one quarter.

Edenfield, Frazier and Stout powered Gleason to an 18-11 lead to start the second frame. Kristina Elliott scored for the Lady Tigers with 4:15 on the clock and Kaylee Thaxton hit one of two from the line. Polk banked in a desperation three at the buzzer for the Lady Tigers to cut the lead to one, 18-17, at the half.

Hensley opened the third with a layup and Berry answered, but Gleason failed to put up any more points for the quarter. Morgan drove in for a layup and Middleton held a 21-20 lead. Frazier picked up her fourth foul with 1:56 left in the third and the Lady Tigers held the ball for the remaining time and entered the fourth with the one-point advantage.

Scoring remained at a standstill for both squads as defensive intensity picked up. Middleton entered the bonus and Howser misfired on four straight free throw attempts, leaving the game still very much up in the air. Morgan was fouled on a drive, however, and hit both of her attempts, increasing the lead to 23-20 and scoring the first points for either squad since midway through the third quarter.

Frazier was fouled on a layup attempt and hit both free throws to cut the Middleton lead to one, 23-22, with 50.7 seconds remaining. The Lady Bulldogs resorted to fouling and Morgan missed the front end of a one-and-one charity chance. On the other end, Frazier missed inside hoping for a foul call and Lady Tiger Kristina Elliott was fouled on the rebound. She hit one of two, but Edenfield sprinted the length of the court for a layup to tie the game at 24-all.

With 9.1 seconds left, Morgan took the ball in an attempt to do the same or draw a foul and plowed into Stout with 3.9 seconds left in the one team’s season. The Lady Tigers had hit just 3-of-9 free throw tries in the fourth up to that point, but with the game on the line and orange-clad Gleason fans screaming in her ears, Morgan sank both attempts to give Middleton a 26-24 lead. The ball was inbounded to Edenfield at half court, but the senior lost the handle, a scramble ensued with no fouls called and the clock ran out on Middleton’s victory.

“The bank-in 3-pointer at the end of the first half came back to haunt us,” the first-year coach added. “Along with the fouls and the turnovers, we missed key layups. It was a short game and there weren’t too many mistakes, but in a short game they make a much bigger impact.”

Morgan led all scorers with nine points. Hensley scored eight for Gleason.

The loss ends the high school basketball careers of GHS seniors Kim Edenfield, Jenna Frazier, Taylor Stout, Elizabeth Terrell and Alexis Tipton.

With the win over Gleason and a 52-44 defeat of Humboldt by Scotts Hill, Middleton and Scotts Hill will represent the northwest area of the state in Class A tournament action this week in Murfreesboro.

When the Region 7-A final came down to the wire, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs displayed the composure and game awareness it takes to be a champion.

In the game’s final 17 seconds, Gleason was perfect on  four free throws and managed to run precious seconds off the clock en route to a 47-44 win over the Humboldt Lady Vikings Tuesday night in Trenton.

On the other end of the court in the waning minutes, Humboldt lost a lead, forced shots and missed its final three free-throw tries. All three were the front end of one-and-one chances.

“We knew if we could get to the free-throw line, we’d down them,” Gleason first-year head coach Joel Ayers said. Ayers was named the Region Coach of the Year.

The regional title is the first for Gleason since the 2006-07 season when they went on to win the Class A state championship with the current crop of seniors participating as freshmen.

With the victory, Gleason gets to host its Sectional on Saturday night with tipoff at 7. The Lady Dawgs will welcome Middleton, the Region 8-A runner-up. Doors will open at 5:30 and advance tickets will be on sale at the school on Friday. A win in the Sectional advances the Lady Dawgs to the Class A State Tournament which will begin on Wednesday in Murfreesboro.Humboldt will visit the Scotts Hill Lady Lions for their Sectional game on Saturday night.

The victorious Gleason girls looked like they might not get a chance to celebrate a region title. The Lady Dawgs trailed by 11 at 37-26 after a Patra Hubbard 3-pointer with 47 ticks to play in the third quarter. Hubbard’s trey was the third from behind the arc in the quarter and seventh of the game for Humboldt. They didn’t connect again from 3-point range. Gleason senior Jenna Frazier, the tourney MVP, nailed a baseline jumper to keep it at single digits, 37-28, heading into the fourth.

On Gleason’s next trip, Kim Edenfield cut the deficit back to two possessions and fired up the orange-clad fans with the first trey of the game for the Lady Dawgs.

Edenfield’s 3-ball ignited a 15-5 run that carried the Lady Dawgs into the lead. Gleason got a Sara Hensley free throw, four consecutive Frazier charity shots, a Taylor Stout layup off a Frazier assist and another Edenfield 3-pointer to cut the Humboldt lead to a point, 43-42, with 3:41 left in the game.

During the run, the GHS defense forced a pair of turnovers. Lady Vike center Jerrica Morgan accounted for four of their five points.

After Frazier missed a free throw, Stout hustled to save the rebound off a Lady Viking. The resulting Gleason possession turned into a trip to the charity stripe for Edenfield. Her first connection knotted the score at 42-all and her second gave the Lady Dawgs a 43-42 lead with 2:35 left to play.

Over the ensuing two minutes, Humboldt missed its next four shots, including a pair of forced treys, the last of which was rebounded by Edenfield. Fouled with 17 seconds left, Edenfield drilled both free throws to stretch the GHS lead to three, 44-41.

“We were glad to finally see them miss. Almost everything they shot went in before that,” Ayers said.
Out of a Humboldt timeout, Hubbard hit a short jumper to cut the deficit to a point. With time on her side, Frazier let a few seconds tick off before picking up the ball and throwing it in. The ball was deflected out of bounds back to Gleason with two seconds left. The next inbound pass came to Edenfield, who was fouled with a second showing. She calmly sank both charity shots to provide the final winning margin of 47-44.

In the first quarter, Gleason attacked the  Humboldt zone from the high post and both Frazier and Stout tallied four points to key the Lady Dawgs to a 10-7 lead.

The GHS lead stretched to six, 13-7, on Stout’s old-fashion 3-point play, but Hubbard took over in the quarter, nailing a trio of 3-pointers to send Humboldt into the half ahead 22-16.

Gleason bulldozed its way into the District 13-A semifinals with an exclamation point.

For the third time this season, the Lady Bulldogs took on the Bruceton Central Lady Tigers and for the third time they proved to be too powerful for the Blue and White to handle as they rolled to a 71-29 win in the quarterfinal round this past Wednesday afternoon in Gleason.

Bruceton, the No. 8 seed in the tourney, advanced to face Gleason by downing Carroll Academy 57-23 in a district tournament play-in game on Tuesday night. With the victory, Gleason also advances to the Region 7-A Tournament.

Taylor Stout drew first blood for the top-seeded Lady Dawgs by rebounding a Camille Cooper misfire and hitting one of two from the line. Kim Edenfield increased the lead to 3-0 with a jump shot, but Nikki Walker answered with a three for Bruceton to tie the score. From there, however, it was all Gleason as the home team scored 14 straight points and led in dominating fashion 17-3 after one.

Brittany Farley put up five for the Lady Tigers in the second quarter, but Gleason again found a rhythm and couldn’t be stopped from the field. Led by six points each from Jenna Frazier and Ashley Coble, the Lady Bulldogs took a commanding 41-10 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers resorted to shooting threes in an attempt to shrink the deficit and they hit six from beyond the arc, but the Lady Bulldogs never cooled off. Leading 64-25 after three, Gleason ran the clock in the fourth and took an easy 71-29 victory to advance to the tournament semifinals in McKenzie on Friday.

The win over Bruceton marked the second time this season the Lady Dawgs scored more than 70 points. Gleason’s season-high point total of 77 came in an easy win over Bruceton on Dec. 18.
Edenfield led Gleason with 15 points. Frazier and Stout each had 13 points. Farley and Alexis McCauley each put up nine points for the Lady Tigers.

Despite a nearly seven-minute scoring drought for both squads, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs were still able to put away from the McKenzie Lady Rebels, 38-27, for a District 13-A win this past Friday night in McKenzie.

The host McKenzie boys earned a split with a win over the Bulldogs, 52-48.

Crystal Doub opened the game with a jumper for the home team and Taylor Stout scored inside to tie the contest. Alex Gray completed a 3-point play, but Stout scored the next three for Gleason to knot the score at five. Ashley Coble opened up an 8-5 Lady Bulldog lead with a 3-pointer at the 3:45 mark, but for the remainder of the quarter neither team could put the ball in the basket.

The drought continued into the second as both squads struggled from the field. Travatia Bowden finally lit up the McKenzie side of the scoreboard with two free throws at the 4:21 mark and Kim Edenfield hit two from the line for Gleason with 4:01 to go in the half. The Lady Bulldogs remained shaky from the field, however, and McKenzie scored six straight to lead 13-10. Edenfield connected from long distance to tie the score at 13 and Sara Hensley hit one of two from the line to give Gleason a slim 14-13 edge at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs overcame the rust in the third, however, and led by seven points from Stout, equaled their first-half points total of 14 and led 28-21 after three.

Doub kept McKenzie alive with five in the fourth, but Stout put up 13 straight points for Gleason dating back to the third quarter and the visitors wound up the game with free throws to pull out a 38-27 win.

Stout led Gleason with 18 points. Edenfield scored 11. Doub had 12 for McKenzie.
The win gave Gleason’s girls a clean sweep of their district opponents for the regular season.

Both squads experienced a similar slow start in the second contest, but Max Arnold came through for the home team in the fourth and McKenzie held on for a 52-48 win.

With seven quick points from Ben Sumner and Ben Rollins, Gleason appeared to be on a fast track to victory with a 7-0 lead, but McKenzie played catch-up and the Bulldogs only posted two more points from Austin Perry to lead 9-8 at the end of one quarter.

Robert Taylor hit two from the free-throw line to open the second and provide a 10-9 lead for the Rebels. Sumner scored a bucket plus a free throw to inch Gleason ahead 12-10, but Shane Nunnery added a layup to cut the lead to one, 12-11. Mark Newman and Kelby McCaleb combined to push McKenzie ahead 15-11, but as the score remained close, Rollins knocked down a three to end the half trimming the Rebel advantage to 18-17.

Rollins and Frazier scored from downtown to take the lead back for Gleason in the third. Rollins kept the Bulldogs ahead with the hot hand from long range and Gleason limited McKenzie to 10 points to lead 33-28 at the end of three.

The fourth quarter belonged to Arnold, however, as he nearly single-handedly led his team to a come-from-behind win. Putting up 14 of his team’s 24 fourth-quarter points, Arnold pushed the Rebels ahead and with the aid of bonus free throws, McKenzie took the 52-48 win.

Arnold led the Rebels with 17 points. Rollins scored a game-high 25 for Gleason’s Bulldogs.

Rallies Fall Short in Dresden, Gleason Split

Stephanie Sturgis - Weakley County Press Sports Editor

Ineffective first quarters were the downfall for both the Dresden Lady Lions and the Gleason Bulldogs as they fell in District 13-A action Tuesday night in Tater Town.Rallies fall short in Dresden, Gleason split | Dresden Lions, Tyler McPeak, Gleason Bulldogs, Preston Frazier, Austin Perry, Ben Rollins, Camille Cooper

The Lady Lions scored on only two possessions in the opening frame on the way to a 53-33 loss to the host Gleason Lady Bulldogs, while the Gleason boys were held scoreless in the first quarter en route to a 47-40 loss to the Lions.

Both squads worked hard to form a comeback try, with the Dawgs managing to scramble into position to attempt a go-ahead shot in the third quarter, before ultimately falling.

In the boys game, the Lions had the advantage immediately in the first quarter. Dillon Matlock drained a 3-pointer on the game’s first possession.
Bulldogs Ben Sumner and Austin Perry battled hard in the paint on defense to keep Dresden’s interior game quiet, but Gleason’s silence on offense didn’t help the Bulldog cause. The Lions limited Gleason chances by not allowing offensive rebounds.

Dresden managed just a Tyler McPeak layup over the next five-plus minutes for a 5-0 lead before four different Lions combined to score eight points in the final 2:32 of the quarter for a 13-0 advantage.

The Lion lead stretched to 17-0 in the second quarter before Gleason’s Ben Rollins nailed a shot behind the 3-point arc with 5:43 to play in the first half. The Dawgs got 3-pointers from Preston Frazier and Gabe Lowrance, before a Rollins steal and layup just prior to the buzzer sliced the DHS advantage back to single digits, 23-15, at halftime.

The Dawgs kept the momentum to start the third frame. Cody Ezell hit a 3-pointer, and Rollins came up with another steal and layup to trim the gap to three at 23-20. After another DHS turnover, Lowrance grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul. The sophomore hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game with 6:37 left in the third. A third consecutive Lion turnover gave the Dawgs an improbable chance to take the lead, but a jumper missed its target.

Lion Matt Beaty ended the Gleason run with a short jumper in the paint that ignited an 11-3 spree over the rest of the quarter to give Dresden a 34-24 lead heading into the fourth.

In the final frame, trailing 41-35 with five minutes left, Gleason squandered a huge opportunity when Matlock was whistled for a technical after another DHS foul in the paint. Gleason made only one of four free throws and did not score on the ensuing possession.

The Lions got four consecutive free throw from Gatlin Hatchel in a 30-second span to help seal the 47-40 win.  McPeak led Dresden with 12 points, while Rollins topped Gleason with 17 and Frazier added 10.

In the girls game, which was a battle for the top spot in District 13-A, the Lady Dawgs got balanced play from both the perimeter and the post and frustrated Dresden on drives into the paint for a 53-33 win. “We took too many 3-pointers. Gleason does a good job of keeping you out of the lane,” DHS head coach Jonathan West said.

Gleason’s Jenna Frazier set the tone with a layup on the first possession. The Lady Dawgs got 3-pointers from Camille Cooper, Sara Hensley and Ashley Coble to go with an old-fashion 3-point play from Frazier in the opening frame.

The Lady Lions countered with a Courtney McMillin 3-point play and an Amy Reddick trey, but trailed 18-6 after a quarter. Both defenses were in control in the second frame as only nine total points were scored. Gleason held a 22-11 lead at halftime.

The Lady Dawgs’ lead stretched to 16 on a Cooper 3-ball in the third, but Dresden worked it back to a 10-point gap, 32-22, on Alex Glisson’s trey with two minutes left in the third.

Heading into the fourth, Gleason led 35-24. The Lady Dawgs took care of business at the free-throw line, connecting on 10-of-11 shots to keep Dresden at bay for the 53-33 victory.

“We started well. I’d like to have done better in the second quarter, but our defense did better in not letting them get in the lane,” first-year GHS head coach Joel Ayers said.

Lady Bulldogs Snap DHS 4-game Win Streak in Split

Stephanie Sturgis - Weakley County Press Sports Editor

The Dresden Lady Lions rolled into their Monday night encounter with the visiting rival Gleason Lady Bulldogs riding a four-game winning streak.

It looked like the Lady Lions might stretch the streak to five wins when a third-quarter rally sent the home team into the fourth quarter with a 26-25 lead, their first of the night.

Instead a 14-0 run by the Gleason girls to start the fourth flipped the momentum and was the deciding factor in the Lady Dawgs' 47-37 victory.

In the second game, the Dresden boys doubled the Dawgs production, 8-4, in the third quarter to push their lead to double digits for the first time en route to their 53-37 win.

In the girls game, the Lady Dawgs were hot from 3-point range early with Jenna Frazier, Kim Edenfield, Ashley Coble and Sara Hensley all nailing treys to lead the way to an 18-9 advantage after a quarter.

In the second and third quarters, the Lady Lions regained their footing and slowed the game's tempo more to their liking. Dresden, taking chunks of time off the clock with each possession, held the Lady Dawgs to three points in the second to trail 21-14 at halftime.

Alex Glisson pitched in 11 of her team-high 15 points in the two middle frames to help Dresden climb closer. Jesica Parsley's trey cut the GHS lead to a point, 25-24, before the Lady Dawgs turned the ball over. A Glisson drive and pull-up jumper put Dresden in front, 26-25, at the end of the third.

In the fourth, the Lady Dawgs ran a give-and-go with Cooper hitting Frazier for a layup, part of her team-high 15 points. Fouled on the play, Frazier nailed the free throw to put Gleason in front for good. The Lady Dawgs went on to connect on 12-of-15 free throws in the quarter to fuel the 47-34 Gleason win.

In the boys game, the Lions held GHS to four points in the third to gain some breathing room in their 53-37 victory.
Ben Rollins kept Gleason on target in the first quarter, scoring all 12 Dawg points including a pair of treys. Dresden countered with a balanced effort led by Daniel Harris' six points to lead 15-12 after a stanza.

The Lions shut down Rollins in the second quarter, but Harris kept scoring. The Lion forward nailed back-to-back shots behind the 3-point line to stretch a one-point lead out to seven points at 26-19. Dresden maintained the seven-point cushion at the half with a 28-21 lead.

In the third, Gleason was limited to four points on buckets by Rollins and Cody Ezell. Dresden managed only eight points total. The DHS lead hit double digits for the first time on a late Dillon Matlock layup for a 36-25 at the end of three quarters.

The Lions never lost their double-digit advantage in the fourth to take the 53-37 win.
Harris topped Dresden with 19 points, while Rollins' 20 points led the Dawgs.
