Gleason AD Lawrence Hangs up Hoops Hat

Kenneth Coker, Weakley County Press Sports

Gleason AD Lawrence hangs up hoops hat | Gleason Athletic Director Lee Lawrence

Lee Lawrence

The “Help Wanted” sign has been put out for both the Gleason high school and middle school boys’ basketball programs.

Assistant principal/athletic director Lee Lawrence has resigned his post as both the middle school and high school boys’ basketball skipper to focus on his new administration duties.

“When I found out I was getting the athletic director and assistant principal job in June, I knew this might be something that I had to do in the future,” said Lawrence — a 29-year-old alum of the school. “At the time, we’d already went through camps and I decided to give it a go and see how it balanced out.

“What I found out is that there’s a lot to take care of as the athletic director  that I can’t do to the best of my ability if I am coaching. “It works out better for everyone involved is if I step back because I’ll have more time to focus on my administration duties and some more family time, too.”

Lawrence, who along with wife Amy is raising 3-year-old son Luke, was the Gleason basketball skipper — at both the high school and junior high level — for five seasons. His teams totaled an overall record of 21-111 during his tenure. His best season was 2008-09 when the squad went 8-19 and — according to Lawrence — was competitive in nearly every contest.

Lawrence’s most recent Bulldog high school squad went 3-24, but the squad did claim its first district tournament under the now-former mentor — albeit one of the play-in game nature.

At the junior high level, Lawrence’s squads compiled a 31-43 worksheet in his time as skipper. The most successful squad finished play in the winter of 2009 with a 9-5 worksheet. “We didn’t reach all the goals we set,” Lawrence admitted. “We had set out to win 10 games and get to the final four of the district. We came close, but weren’t able to do that.  “I think where we did improve was in raising the expectations of the boys in the program in terms of work ethic. They’ve been coming in the gym and putting extra work in and that’s something I can’t say has always been the case at Gleason.”

No concrete timetable has been set to name a replacement and Lawrence told that the next high school coach may not also carry out middle school duties. However, Lawrence did say that the school would like to have someone in place before the end of the 2010-11 school year.

Lawrence also said that assistant coaches Jamie Roney and Chris Leo would probably continue with the program in some capacity regardless of who the new hire is. Roney and Leo are both in the running along with others for the job(s). Source: Weakley County Press.

For the Gleason Bulldogs, the theme Saturday night was survival.

The Bulldogs kept their season alive with a 61-50 win over the Carroll Academy Jaguars in a must-win District 13-A play-in game at Atwood.

The victory advances the Dawgs to the quarterfinals where they will take on the host Dresden Lions at 6:30 on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs led by as many as a dozen points, 51-39, mid way through the fourth quarter. The desperate Jaguars cranked up the pressure and  cut their deficit in half by forcing Gleason into turnovers on three of four possessions.
A Gabe Lowrance layup after the Dawgs beat the press slowed the Carroll Academy comeback and gave Gleason a 55-47 lead with 2:03 remaining.

From that point, Thomas Fowler came up with an offensive rebound and hit 4-of-6 free throw tries to extend the Dawgs’ advantage to 59-50 with 39 ticks left on the clock.
Austin Perry then created a steal and hit a layup for the final points in Gleason’s 61-50 victory.

Gleason used second chance points and free throws to pull ahead in the first quarter. Fowler and Perry each put in four points to propel the Dawgs to a 13-9 lead after a frame.
Gleason expanded its lead in the second quarter. Both Ben Rollins and Fowler pitched in with five points including a connection from behind the 3-point line.

Tanner Trevathan’s last-second jumper gave the Dawgs their first double-digit cushion, 30-20, at the half.

Rollins added his second trey of the night early in the third. The Dawgs appeared on the verge of a blowout victory as Perry put in a 4-footer for a 45-28 lead with 1:12 left in the third and held a 45-29 lead into the fourth.
Rollins’ 16 points led Gleason. Fowler and Perry each added 14 points. Marcus Bardwell’s 20 topped Carroll Academy.

Fourth-quarter Surge Aids Lady Bulldogs

Sara Rachels — Special to the Weakley County Press

Leading after three quarters and holding the Lady Bulldogs to five points in both the second and third frames, McKenzie saw an opportunity to go for the throat of the District 13-A co-leader. Trouble was the Lady Rebels forgot to score in the fourth and Gleason pulled out the win, 34-27, to sweep the season series on Friday night in Gleason. The McKenzie boys salvaged a split by downing the Bulldogs 48-39.

In the opener, speedy Travatia Bowden put four quick points in for the Lady Rebels while Gleason started cold. Briana Jones scored the first two for the Lady Dawgs with four-plus minutes on the clock and then added a free throw to cut the MHS lead to one. Once Jones broke the ice, Sara Hensley picked up the slack with nine of the Lady Bulldogs’ 14 first-quarter points. Gleason took the 14-9 lead into the second quarter, but fell into a two-quarter slump that fueled McKenzie’s confidence.

Kelsey Carr and Crystal Doub scored three points each for the Lady Rebels in the second. Ashley Coble scored all five GHS points and the hosts held a two-point edge, 19-17, at the break.

Encoring their less-than-stellar effort in the third, Gleason forfeited its lead as Carr scored four straight to open the frame. Bowden’s jump shot increased the lead to four, 25-21, but Camille Cooper nailed a crucial three to cut the MHS edge to one. However, Gleason managed just five points and trailed 27-24 after three.

McKenzie smelled victory and sought to take advantage of the Lady Bulldogs’ low scoring, but the shoe proved to be on the other foot. The Lady Rebels couldn’t buy a basket and Jones scored four of Gleason’s 10 points to secure the 34-27 victory.

Both Jones and Hensley led Gleason with 11 points each. Bowden and Carr scored 10 each for McKenzie. The last time the McKenzie and Gleason boys met on Jan. 7, an extra session was needed, but not this time. McKenzie demonstrated control from the beginning and won decisively, 48-39.

Thomas Fowler opened scoring for the Dawgs with a three, but McKenzie soon made up the deficit. With four points each from Shane Nunnery and Max Arnold, the Rebels raced to a 14-6 lead at the end of one.

Ben Rollins got on the board for Gleason in the second with four points. Gabe Lowrance added a hoop, but the Rebs remained steady. With four points from Hunter Lowe and Arnold, MHS pushed the lead to 26-12 at the break.

Rollins found the range in the third with eight of Gleason’s 11 points to cut the lead to 29-20 midway through the quarter. Trevor Willis scored four Reb points, though, and McKenzie led 35-23 after three.

Several Bulldogs stepped up in the fourth. Lowrance and Fowler scored five each to slim the lead to single digits. Blake Taylor supplemented with four points, but the Rebs closed out strong and ended regular-season play with a 48-39 win.

Lowe led the Rebels with 12 points. Rollins was high scorer for Gleason with 14.

Lady Bulldogs, Mustangs Split at Gleason

By Lindsey Arnold

arnold@mckenziebanner.com

GLEASON (February 4) Gleason High School welcomed the Fillies and Mustangs of Huntingdon in a District 13-A, cross-county basketball double-header Friday night.

In ladies’ action, Gleason’s Sara Hensley and Briana Jones sparked their squad with 16 and 7 points, respectively as the Lady Bulldogs led the Fillies at the half, 23-11. In the second half, Hensley added a three-pointer and Camille Cooper tallied three treys to aid Gleason to a 50-33 win.

The Fillies tallied 17 points in the final frame and were paced by Allee Maxwell with eleven points. Mustang Corbin Jordan sank a three-ball and Olajuwon Clark tallied two treys as Gleason trailed, 14-7, after one frame in the nightcap. Clark converted another three-pointer and Bulldog Ben Rollins ended the period via steal and score as Huntingdon led, 21-13 at the half.

A Jordan trey sparked a 13-4 Mustang run to open the third frame. Bulldog forward Austin Perry notched ten of Gleason’s 28 second-half points, including four of four free throw conversions, though Huntingdon held on for a 56-41 win.

Lady Bulldogs 50, Fillies 33

The Fillies struggled offensively in the first frame as Gleason allowed a field goal each by Allee Maxwell and Tashsara Mebane. Lady Bulldog Sara Hensley tallied a trey and four two-point field goals and Briana Jones added three baskets to push the Gleason advantage to 18-6. Huntingdon’s Heather Todd converted two of three from the charity stripe in the period.

The Lady Bulldog defense continued to stymie Huntingdon as a Madison Ballard three-pointer and Maxwell lay-up constituted the Fillies five points in the second period. Hensley scored another field goal and converted two of two from the charity stripe as Gleason led, 23-11, at halftime.

Maxwell tallied three points and Savannah Dodson scored a field goal for the Fillies in the third frame. Gleason’s Camille Cooper drained a pair of treys and Jones and Ashley Coble added a basket each as the Lady Bulldogs increased their lead, 33-16, after three periods.

The offenses came alive in the final frame as both squads scored 17 points. While Huntingdon’s Maxwell tallied a pair of field goals, Ballard added a three-ball and Morgan McMackin scored six points, the Lady Bulldogs kept pace via Jones’ eight-point frame and a Hensley three-ball en route to clinching a 50-33 victory.

Leading Lady Bulldog scorers included: Hensley – 19, Jones – 17, Cooper – 9, Ashley Coble – 2, Shawna Blassingame – 2, Alex King – 1.

 Leading Fillies scorers included: Maxwell – 11, Ballard – 6, McMackin – 6, Dodson – 4, Mebane – 2, Todd – 2, Hannah Belew – 2.

Huntingdon 56, Gleason 41

Mustang Olajuwon Clark tallied a three-ball at the 6:22 mark of the first period to open the gents’ scoring. Gleason countered as Austin Perry scored in the post. A trey by Mustang Corbin Jordan converted a three-pointer with 4:57 remaining. Gleason’s Ben Rollins answered via trey before two Brandon Melton field goals and another Clark three-ball pushed Huntingdon’s lead to 14-7 after one frame.

Huntingdon’s Clark and Torey Watson added a trey and layup, respectively, and Gleason answered via field goals by Perry and Dakota Parsons in a low scoring second frame as the Mustangs led, 21-13, at the half.

Resuming play in the third period, Mustang Jordan tallied a pair of three-point conversions during a 13-4 Huntingdon run. A Rollins field goal at the 1:14 mark stopped that run and two Perry free throws preceded two Melton field goals as the Bulldogs trailed, 43-21, after three frames.

Though the Bulldogs outscored Huntingdon in the final frame, 20-13, via three Rollins field goals and treys by Blake Taylor and Avery Or r, Melton added five to his game-high 18 points and Taylor McCarty scored four points as the Mustangs sealed a 56-41 district victory.

Leading Huntingdon scorers included: Melton – 18, Clark – 12, Jordan – 8, Watson – 8, McCarty – 4, Barrett Phelps – 4, Donnell Burden – 2.

Leading Gleason scorers included: Rollins – 13, Perry – 12, Parsons – 8, Taylor – 3, Orr – 3, Chris Sumner – 2.

Lady Lion Win over Gleason Forges District Tie

Lady Lion win over Gleason forges district tie

The fourth quarter belonged to the Dresden Lady Lions and as a result so does a perch atop the district.

Dresden outscored the visiting Gleason Lady Bulldogs 20-7 in the final stanza to earn a 48-37 win and forge a tie for first in the District 13-A standings.

The Dresden boys made it a sweep despite a career night from Bulldog Thomas Fowler. The Lions earned an 81-54 win over Gleason.

In the girls game, the Lady Lions broke open a close game with key 3-pointers early in the fourth and then hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 68 seconds to seal the deal.

Gleason led most of the first quarter thanks to a trey from guard Camille Cooper and five points inside from Briana Jones.

Heading into the second stanza, the Lady Bulldogs were up 12-7 and stretched that lead to eight points on two occasions (15-7 and 19-11) before Amy McAlpin and Alex Glisson helped Dresden fight back. Glisson drilled a 3-pointer as part of her five consecutive points. Amy Reddick’s steal led to a McAlpin layup and a second GHS turnover allowed McAlpin to tie the score at the half (20-all) with an 8-footer that rattled in.

Back-to-back treys from Ashley Coble and Cooper put Gleason ahead 26-20, but later Dresden got consecutive 3-balls from McAlpin and Jessica Jones for a 28-all tie heading into the fourth quarter.

The 3-pointers continued to fall for Dresden. Reddick and Glisson sandwiched 3-balls around a Briana Jones old-fashioned 3-point play for a 34-31 DHS lead. Jessica Jones grabbed an offensive rebound and drove in for a layup. Jesica Parsley worked the ball inside off the dribble and earned a traditional 3-point play to extend the Lady Lion lead to 41-33 mid way through the fourth quarter.

Trailing, Gleason opted to foul and Dresden twice missed the first of one-and-ones, but the Lady Dawgs did not take advantage.

From there, Dresden’s Jones and McAlpin each hit four free throws to seal the 48-37 victory. Gleason took the first meeting, 44-30, on Dec. 13, 2010.

In the boys game, it appeared Dresden would run away with the victory early. The Lions led 22-3 after one quarter. Daniel Harris had seven points and Matt Beaty added six for DHS.

Gleason, which scored its first six points on free throws, tallied its first field goal on a Gabe Lowrance layup with 3:38 to play in the first half to cut the DHS lead to 26-10.
Then Fowler and teammate Ben Rollins went to work and trimmed the Lion lead to single digits, 36-27, with a minute left to play in the half. Fowler had nine points in the frame and Rollins put in seven.

Dresden answered with two daggers — a Joseph Sipes trey and a Harris halfcourt buzzer-beater to lead 42-27 at halftime.

Thanks to Fowler’s pesky defensive play and his 16 points in the second half, Gleason stayed in the game, but could not halt the depth and athleticism of the Lions, falling 81-54.
Fowler finished with 28 points, while Rollins totaled 15 for Gleason.

The Lions had four players in double digits topped by Harris’ 22 points. The other three Lions were Jacob Vallee (16), Tyler McPeak (16) and Beaty (12).

Lady Bulldogs rolling in 2011; Gleason boys fall in overtime

The Gleason Lady Bulldogs find themselves in a familiar spot once again, though it hasn’t been as easy to reach as it was in the past.

After having started off the 2010 season in topsy-turvy fashion with adjustments in moving veteran players into new positions and finishing the calendar year with losses in the Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament, Gleason has put together a three-game winning streak to start 2011 and move itself atop the District 13-A standings.

Beginning on Jan. 4, the Lady Bulldogs knocked off then co-district leader Huntingdon, surprised Bradford with a two-point defeat on Jan. 6 in non-district action and recorded another district victory, 49-41, Friday night in McKenzie.

The Gleason boys nearly earned their first district win of the season, but the host McKenzie Rebels took control in overtime to edge the visiting Bulldogs, 53-44.

At the home of the Rebels, the Lady Bulldogs opened the contest tentatively in the first quarter. Briana Jones put up the first points inside, but the Lady Rebels were ready with an answer and Crystal Doub was hot from the field. Jones scored inside again and Camille Cooper added a three to put Gleason up 7-2, but the visitors couldn’t muster another bucket for the rest of the quarter and into the second as the Lady Rebels went on a tear and built a 14-7 advantage early in the second frame.

Sara Hensley ended the Lady Bulldog scoring drought with a jump shot at the 5:30 mark and the rest of the Gleason players took their cue from her as both Hensley and Ashley Coble nailed a pair of threes and Cooper added a layup to surge Gleason ahead, 23-22, at the half.

Jones put the Lady Bulldogs on her back in the third and scored 12 points to bump the lead up to four, 38-34, after three quarters and Cooper scored five in the fourth to McKenzie’s seven total points to secure the 49-41 victory. Jones led all scorers with 20 points. Both Hensley and Cooper scored 10. Doub put up 16 for the Lady Rebels.

Gleason gave the Rebels all they could stand in the second game and nearly picked up its first district win, but McKenzie outlasted the Bulldogs in overtime for the 53-44 victory.

Austin Perry scored the first two points for Gleason and two long-distance shots from Ben Rollins pushed the Bulldogs out to a 9-5 advantage. Rollins was coming off a 22-point effort the night before against Bradford. Among those 22 points was the 1,000th of his high school career. A Hunter Lowe trey closed the gap to one, but the visitors finished strong and held a 12-8 lead after one.

McKenzie caught fire in the second quarter, however, and as the points racked up for the Rebels, the baskets slowed down for the Bulldogs. Led by six points from Trevor Willis, the home team outscored the visitors, 14-4, for the quarter and took a 22-16 lead into the break.

Trading baskets through the first few minutes of the third quarter, the Bulldogs cut the lead to three on a Rollins 3-pointer and narrowed the gap to two, 30-28, at the 2:53 mark. Perry scored inside to tie the contest and the visitors regained the lead, 31-30, on a free throw from Dakota Parsons. Curtis Broadbent put the Rebels back in the lead with a steal and layup and MHS escaped the third with a one-point edge, 32-31.

With both teams passing a one-point advantage back and forth in the final frame, Gleason saw breathing room with two minutes and change on the clock when Blake Taylor drove in for a layup to make the score 41-38 in favor of the visitors. Lowe hit both free throws of a bonus situation, however, and the Dawg lead shrank back to one. A Tanner Trevathan free throw made it a two-point game, 42-40, but with 14.2 seconds remaining, Max Arnold hit the tying layup. Gleason took possession with seven seconds and a chance to win. Taylor drove to the hoop, was whistled for a charge and time expired with a tie.

In overtime, Gleason only managed two points from Rollins and McKenzie scored 11 to put the contest out of reach, 53-44.

Lowe led the Rebels with 13 points. Willis and Arnold scored 11 each. Rollins put up 18 for Gleason in the loss.

Gleason Wins Hard-fought Game Over Bradford

By Michael Odom
Michodom@Jacksonsun.com

January 7, 2011

GLEASON — The rivalry between Gleason and Bradford has been a fierce one for years as the teams hold a combined nine Class A state championships.

The gymnasium is always full and loud from both sides.

Thursday's game was no different in Gleason's 40-38 win until the attention turned away from basketball for twenty minutes when Bradford's Kristian McCrillis went to the floor with what Lady Red Devils coach Larry Eddings called an apparent concussion.

With 2:36 remaining in the third quarter, McCrillis took a charge from Gleason's Camelle Cooper, and as McCrillis fell, the back of her head hit the gymnasium floor.

McCrillis tried to get up but was wobbly while sitting up. A person from each side of the stands came down to help.

A neck brace was placed around her neck and oxygen and intravenous fluid were administered. What was normally a lively crowd fell silent.

The ambulance arrived, and McCrillis was placed on a backboard and wheeled out of the gymnasium. As the stretcher left the gym, both sides gave her a standing ovation. McCrillis was taken to McKenzie Regional Hospital for evaluation.

Both teams were given three minutes to warm up, and the game resumed with Bradford holding a 28-22 lead.

Gleason sophomore Jaclyn Montgomery hit two free throws with .4 seconds remaining to finish off a 14-5 fourth quarter comeback to sweep the season series.

"We missed free throws in the first half that put us in a hole," Gleason coach Joel Ayers said. "I thought Sara Hensley played great defense for us."

Bradford (8-6, 2-3) picked up right where it left off before the injury as Leah Reeves sank her fourth 3-pointer of the game to put Bradford up 31-22. Reeves led the Lady Red Devils with 17 points, and Jackilann Street added 10.

"I told the girls after the game that I couldn't ask them to play any harder than they have in 11 of the past 12 quarters," Eddings said. "I thought both teams picked up where they left off at the injury."

Gleason (9-5, 5-1) started the comebac

k in the final 1:24 of the quarter and narrowed the Bradford lead to 33-26 entering the fourth.

The Lady Bulldogs pounded the post for the entire final eight minutes with Jones scoring six of her game-high 19 points.

"We didn't hit outside shots tonight, and we had to find a way to hit," Ayers said. "These situations help us learn what to do and what not to do."

Both teams return to district action tonight. Bradford travels to Halls, and Gleason travels to McKenzie. Both games start at 6 p.m.

"The good thing is we go right back to the floor tomorrow night," Eddings said. "This doesn't affect where we want to go. It just hurts our feelings."

Boys

Bradford 85, Gleason 47

The Red Devils (6-8) outscored Gleason 26-6 in the second quarter to cruise to the win.

Bradford was led by Brandon Armstrong with 19 points, and Tyler McCartney added 16.

Ben Rollins led the Bulldogs with 22 points.

The Westview Lady Chargers took control in crunch time to fend off county foe Gleason, 49-37, in the semifinals of the 46th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament Wednesday night in Martin.

The score was knotted at 30-all when the final quarter began. Westview got the first five points of the frame on a Breanna Pitcher 3-pointer and a baseline jumper by Teddy Vincent. The Lady Dawgs had an answer when Ashley Coble scored on a putback.

Four different players scored as Westview went on an 8-3 run to move ahead 43-35. Coble’s fourth trey of the game provided the only GHS points.

Taylor Swaim hit six consecutive free throws in the final 52 seconds to seal Westview’s 49-37 win.

Coble was  hot from behind the arch in the first quarter, drilling a trio of 3-pointers. Camille Cooper also added one in the first for GHS as the Lady Dawgs, thanks to good ball movement, held a 16-12 lead after a quarter.

Turnovers late in the second quarter kept Gleason from expanding its lead for a slim 23-21 halftime edge.

Coble topped all scorers with 14 points. Pitcher, Kaley Leyhue and Vincent each scored 11 for WHS.

The Gleason Lady Bulldogs faded in the fourth and fell, 34-29, to the Madison Academic Lady Mustangs in the battle for third place in the 46th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament on Thursday.

Gleason gave up nearly as many points in the fourth quarter (16) as it did through the first three combined (18). As a result, the Lady Dawgs’ 20-18 lead heading into the fourth evaporated.

Both defenses forced misses and turnovers through the first half. Gleason trailed 8-7 after one quarter and led 11-10 at the half.

Five consecutive Ashley Coble points put GHS up 16-10, but back-to-back turnovers kept Gleason from stretching its lead.
Madison held Gleason scoreless for nearly five minutes to start the fourth, taking the win and third place.

Gleason basketball fans got a late Christmas present on Tuesday when both the Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs picked up wins in the 46th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament on Tuesday in Martin. Both Gleason victories came as a result of their out-hustling their opponent and scrapping for loose balls and rebounds.

For the Gleason boys, the 41-36 victory over the Hickman County Falcons from the Bluegrass State broke an 11-month drought and earned them a shot at fifth place in the tourney. Gleason will next play against Madison at 2:30 this afternoon (Thursday).

The GHS boys’ win snapped a 15-game losing streak that dated back to a 75-74 triumph over Big Sandy on Jan. 26 of this year. Tuesday’s tournament win came on the heels of their 65-30 loss to Fulton City on Monday night in the tourney’s first contest.

In their tournament opener, the Lady Bulldogs dominated the first half and took a 33-22 win over the Dyer County Lady Choctaws to place them in the semifinals.

The Lady Dawgs faded in the fourth quarter and fell in semifinal action to Westview, 49-37, on Wednesday night and will play for third place vs. Madison at 4 p.m. today (Thursday). Details of the game vs. Westview will be in the Jan. 4 edition of The Press.

The GHS Bulldogs were out-manned in their tourney debut. Fulton City used a big run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second frame to create separation. Fulton City led 15-7 after a quarter and stretched the gap to 17 points, 29-17, at halftime using its size inside and quickness on the perimeter. Ben Rollins and Austin Perry each scored eight points to lead Gleason.

The Gleason boys put the loss behind them and played with intensity and hustle to down Hickman County 41-36 in Tuesday’s game. Trailing 20-15 at halftime, the Dawgs turned things around in the third. Rollins and Thomas Fowler each hit big 3-pointers. Dakota Parsons kept a possession alive with a hustle play that turned into a Rollins layup for a 28-25 lead with a minute left in the third. Fowler put in a jumper and beat the buzzer with a 3-ball in the quarter’s final 23 ticks to excite the Gleason faithful and let the Dawgs carry a 33-27 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, Gleason’s defense forced misses and turnover and the Dawgs hit just enough free throws to keep the Falcons at bay. Rollins’ 15 points led GHS, while Fowler added 9.

In the Gleason girls’ win over Dyer County, Lady Dawg senior Sara Hensley had a huge second quarter with 10 of her game-high 16 points and numerous steals and rebounds. Hensley’s effort let Gleason stretch a 9-3 lead after a quarter into a 21-7 halftime advantage.

Dyer County’s third-quarter rally try was snuffed out by the Lady Dawg defense. Hensley added a late hoop to send Gleason into the fourth ahead 25-16 en route to the 33-22 win.
