Ashley McElhiney made history as the first female head coach of a men's
professional basketball team. She joins one of only a handful of female
coaches of men's teams in any sport throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The Rhythm has a record of 16-6, third in the east division of the
American Basketball Association (ABA) league in the team's debut season.
Twelve teams comprise the ABA League Blue Division (east) including
Atlanta Vision, Boston Frenzy, Carolina Thunder, Reigning Knights of
Georgia, Harlem, Jacksonville Wave, Maryland Nighthawks, Mississippi,
Nashville Rhythm, New Jersey Skycats, Philadelphia Fusion, and
Pennsylvania Pit Bulls.
The Rhythm are led by former Mississippi State, New York Knick, and Boston
Celtic Dontae Jones. Jones leads the ABA in scoring at over 30 points per
game. The Rhythm also feature the NCAA all-time steals leader Desmond
Cambridge. Former Union City star Marcus Williams is averaging over 10
points per game for the Rhythm.
Nashville Rhythm plays its home games at Lipscomb University's Allen
Arena.
McElhiney was an All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) college performer for
the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2002 and 2003, won Vanderbilt's most
outstanding defensive player award three years in a row, and was named to
Vanderbilt's All Century team.
"I receive so much support from my family and I am excited to be able to
play one more game in my hometown," said McElhiney. "With the quality of
players between ourselves and Saint Louis, we are going to provide Gleason
with some great basketball."
During her career with Vanderbilt, McElhiney dished out 683 assists and
led the entire SEC in assists as a sophomore. She was a second team
all-SEC selection as a junior, made the list of ESPN's top five point
guards in the nation and was a member of the Gold Medal winning 2001 U.S.
World University Games team. As a senior, she was named to the AP All-SEC
Team, the Women's College Hoops All-American Team and was even awarded the
Nashville Kiwanis Club's Female Athlete Award. In 2003, McElhiney was a
third-round draft pick of the WNBA's Indiana Fever and the 35th player
taken overall. Source:

McElhiney Bringing
Pro Basketball to Tater Town
Gleason is known far and wide as
a basketball hotbed, but few would expect it to be the host site for a
professional basketball game.
That is until one takes into
account the combination of Tater Town hoop legend Ashley McElhiney and her
affiliation with the Nashville Rhythm of the American Basketball
Association.
McElhiney, the head coach for
the Rhythm and a former Gleason Lady Bulldog, will bring her new team to
Gleason for a game against the St. Louis Flight on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Gleason High School's new gymnasium.
This will be the first time ever
Gleason plays host to a professional sporting event. Both the Rhythm and
the Flight were looking to make up a previously scheduled road game, so a
"neutral" site was scheduled for the game. The Rhythm currently sports a
14-5 record, standing second in the Blue Division of the ABA, while St.
Louis carries a 4-6 overall mark.
McElhiney won't be the only West
Tennessee native returning home as the Nashville squad features former
Union City High School standout Marcus Williams, who led UCHS to its third
Class 2A state championship in 1997. Another eye-catching name on the
Rhythm roster is that of Dontae Jones, a former standout at Mississippi
State.
McElhiney, who keyed Gleason's
run to a state title in 1999 -- the same year she was named Class A Miss
Basketball -- broke many barriers when she was named as the head coach of
the fledgling franchise in May of 2004, becoming the first female coach of
a men's pro hoop team.
Her hardcourt accolades did not
end at the high school level, as she went on to a sterling four-year
collegiate career playing for the Vanderbilt Commodores in the
Southeastern Conference and earned a gold medal as a member of the 2001
USA World University Games team.
"I receive so much support from
my family and I am excited to be able to play one more game in my
hometown," McElhiney said in a Rhythm press release announcing the Tater
Town game. "With the quality of players between ourselves and St. Louis,
we are going to provide Gleason with some great basketball," McElhiney
added.
Tickets are $12 and the
Nashville franchise is offering several packages on all pre-ordered
tickets. Basketball fans can buy two tickets and a commemorative T-shirt
for $35 or buy two tickets and two T-shirts for $40. There is a limited
amount of seats available. Fans may reserve tickets by calling (615)
279-6666 or by requesting an order form via e-mail at info@nashvillehoops.
