GLEASON - With 55 years of
Gleason basketball in attendance on Friday night, Gleason's Amy Suddath said she
wanted to show off a little.
And after hitting five 3-pointers and pouring in 17 points in a 66-31
Gleason victory against West Carroll on Friday night, Suddath smiled, knowing
the mission had been accomplished.
"We just wanted to show everybody that we've got a
pretty good team," Suddath said.
Friday night also marked the final regular-season
game played at Dudley Sanders Memorial gym, which has played host to Gleason
basketball since 1949.
Gleason coach Randy Frazier acknowledged that his team had a little
something extra to play for.
"I was glad to see we played so well because it was
pretty emotional, and I knew the girls felt it," Frazier said.
At 21-3, Gleason is one of the dominant teams in the area, but two losses
last week have clouded the Lady Bulldogs' hopes of a deep playoff run. But after
beating Clarksburg on Tuesday and Friday's win, Frazier said his team is back on
track.
"Those games we lost were against some very good
teams," Frazier said. "Tonight, we put some pressure on the ball, and kept it
away from West Carroll's two talented post players."
Suddath, for one, hopes the losing is behind the
Lady Bulldogs.
"You win some, and you lose some," Suddath said.
"But I think we've got our heads on straight now."
West Carroll 68, Gleason 43: West Carroll's Xavier Webb scored 26 points
as the War Eagles didn't have much trouble defeating Gleason.
After winning 10 consecutive games, the War Eagles
(19-5) lost on Tuesday to Trenton, and Webb said that might have been just what
the team needed.
"It really woke us up after that loss," Webb said.
"We were excited and pumped to play in front of the big crowd (Friday)."
West Carroll coach John Stigall said he was thrilled
that his team was able to bury the Bulldogs (2-18) quickly, so he could rest the
starters for Tuesday's game against Huntingdon and the playoffs after that.
"We beat Gleason pretty bad at our place," Stigall
said. "So I was worried that we'd come out flat tonight.
"But with the huge crowd and the excitement, there
was no way that was going to happen."
